The GABBEH is a very unique hand-woven tribal Persian rug, made by the Nomadic people of the Zagros mountains in the South of Iran.
In a land where it seems that time stands still, huge numbers of extended families move from one grazing pasture to another with their sheep and goats. The people's hospitality and vibrant colored clothes are in stark contrast to the bare and desolate country that they live in.Gabbeh carpets are mentioned in scripts as early as the 16th century. The unfettered and unrestricted lives of the Nomadic people are reflected in these designs. They are extremely simple and uncluttered, depicting large fields, bold stripes, geometric shapes, and contemporary designs of humans and animals. It is often a favorite among many contemporary designers because of its beauty and utmost simplicity.
The Gabbeh designs are much different than traditional Persian carpets. They are hand-knotted by women, and the work is carried out with much enthusiasm and delight. Young girls begin creating these works of art early in their lives to demonstrate their preparedness for marriage and to offer their handiwork as part of their dowry. It is customary for most women to have this wonderful talent.
The hand-spun wool is dyed in a central plant, working from traditional techniques that have been passed down from past generations.
